Nepali Typing Shortcut Keys — Matras, Conjuncts & Symbols
नेपाली टाइपिङ सर्टकट
Nepali typing shortcuts are reserved character sequences inside the Romanized engine that produce specific Devanagari elements — matras, halant, conjuncts, anusvara and punctuation. They let you reach less-common characters without leaving the keyboard.
How do I type matras (vowel signs)?
Vowel signs are produced by appending the vowel directly after a consonant — 'ka' → क, 'ki' → कि, 'kee' or 'kI' → की, 'ku' → कु, 'koo' or 'kU' → कू, 'ke' → के, 'kai' → कै, 'ko' → को, 'kau' → कौ. The engine attaches the matra automatically.
How do I type a halant (हलन्त) to suppress the vowel?
Append an apostrophe or capital 'X' after the consonant to force a halant — 'kX' or 'k'' produces क्. The halant is required when you want a bare consonant at the end of a word or before a conjunct.
How do I type anusvara (ं) and visarga (ः)?
Use 'M' or '.n' for anusvara (ं) — 'haM' produces हं. Use 'H' or '.h' for visarga (ः) — 'duHkha' produces दुःख. Both are common in academic and religious Nepali writing.
How do I type Nepali punctuation and numbers?
Devanagari numerals 0–9 are produced by holding shift on number keys or using the dedicated shortcut row in the editor. Purna biram (।) is produced by typing '|' or 'period'. Question marks and other Latin punctuation work as usual.
